Schumacher SC-600A SpeedCharge High Frequency Battery Charger

Item arrived quickly but was non-functioanl. Obviously a return or refurbished though not advertised that way. Took several hours to disassemble and get working and you needed a EE degree to make it work. Still not 100%. Price was cheap, but as they say you get what you pay for.

Charged my car battery this morning but even at “75%”, it had charged the battery to over 13.0 volts. I was skeptical but a voltmeter and multimeter both gave the same reading. Not happy about that.
I have used it a lot and wonder if it messed up a previous battery that failed.

I have a variety of gel cell batteries some are the AGM type. These range from 7ah to 55ah, 12 volt. This charger seems to charge them real well. If the charger has trouble with the battery, it will go into the de-sulfate mode and then retry to charge. Usually if it wont charge the batter the battery is defective. It has not failed to charge any battery that is still in fair to good condition. I would recommend this charger to anyone needing to charge gel cell agm batteries.

I recently purchased a slightly used SC-600A battery charger & I am very satisfied with the product.
It is very easy to use & allows you to select 2, 4 or 6 amp charging rate. The charger indicates the level
of charge in the battery as it is charging & goes into a maintenance mode automatically when the battery is
fully charged. This charger is perfect for my use in maintaining the battery in the kit car I am building
which is asked to supply power many times when the engine is off. The six amps of output can even run the
130 PSI air compressor for the air lift system.

I seem to have an endless supply of batteries that need to be kept charged: my sports car over the winter, boat, jet ski, boat lift battery, etc. So I’ve used a number of chargers before. Although this unit offers better feedback through the electronic indicators than older Schumacher chargers, it actually seems kind of lightweight and flimsy. That’s just an impression, though, and I’ve only used the charger for a week, so it may hold up fine. I did notice that even after the charger indicated the battery it was hooked up to was fully charged, the little fan in the unit (looks like a computer cooling fan) was still running, which again worries me as far as longevity.
Lastly, as someone else pointed out, these chargers are available at Walmart and MUCH cheaper. I paid $28.94 plus tax for my SC 600A–much cheaper than the current Amazon price of over $60.
